The Charles Square - New Town of Prague
The Charles Square (originally called the Cattle Market), the largest square in Central Europe covering an area of 80500 square meters, was founded by the King Charles IV as the main centre of Prague's New Town.
The New Town Hall (Novomestska radnice), built in the second half of the 14th century, is located in the north-eastern side of the Charles Square. A large part of the Town Hall's Gothic structure has survived in spite of the later reconstruction in the Renaissance style in the 16th century. The New Town Hall served to its purpose up to end of 18th century and renovated in 1905 the building today is used for the purposes of social and cultural events.
The early Baroque Church of St. Ignatius (Chram Sv. Ignace), built in the second half of the 17th century, stands In the middle of the eastern side of the Charles Square, in the corner with Jecna street.
The south-western corner house with a Baroque facade at Charles Square 40 is the Mladota House (Mladotuv dum) dating from the 14th century. It is also known as Faust House (Faustuv dum) - the Prague version of the Faust legend is linked to this building, and several of its real owners had devoted themselves to alchemy,
Since the half of the 19th century the Charles Square is covered by a park, and today, it is still a beautiful place to sit and relax in the center of Prague's New Town district of the Prague city.
